Methodologies

This topic challenged me to consider methodologies beyond the ones I typically use in commercial work. Beyond my freelance business, I teach photography to secondary students. I fear that the consistent foundation introduction keeps me plateaued personally at the rudimentary level. Teaching the “rules” of composition every 10 weeks to a new group of beginner photographers enables a certain comfort with the basics that I have to force myself to dig myself out from. That, coupled with the fact that I don’t have formal training in photography beyond the foundation courses leaves me feeling as though I’ve allowed myself to sink into a ditch of ignorance. Colin’s writing, that he shared on my fora posting, (https://witness.worldpressphoto.org/why-photograph-when-every-picture-has-already-been-made-9dbbb0df7390) left me excited to be at the bottom of such a ditch with a shovel in my hand.
I was inspired to consider escaping from Cliché, as I move forward, but fear that if I am honest with myself, I will continue to create images that are similar to those I am drawn to. I wonder where one can find the balance between exposing oneself to inspiration and avoiding the tropes that come with such exposure.
