Warm up

It's probably been a long time since you've drawn in a sketchbook.
Let's get warmed up!

Using your materials as models

Learning to draw takes time and commitment. We would never expect a beginner basketball player to make every shot without practice - the same holds true with drawing. The more you do it, the better you will become.

To help you become familiar with your supplies, the first assignment in your sketchbook will be to use your materials as your model.

Step 1:

Open your sketchbook to a fresh spread.

A spread is two pages side-by-side.

Choose a drawing tool such as a pen or pencil. Using flat lines, try to draw it in real size. The size of your drawing should be the size of your tool.  Repeat this a few times using different tools

Step 2:

On the same spread

Continue to draw your tools, this time try to record any curved lines you see. Your lines should reflect the volume of the actual shape. Curved lines will help you to achieve this. Do your best to get the proportions correct in your drawing.

Paso 2:

Step 3:

On the same spread

Continue to draw your tools, this time try to achieve the effect of volume using shading.

Paso 3:

Step 4:

Open your sketchbook to a fresh spread.

You will be creating a composition of drawn tools. Decide how you will like them spaced out on the page.

You should include at least 8 drawing tools on your page, so choose your size accordingly.

4 of your drawing tools should be drawn from memory.

For the remaining 4 tools, use your imagination to create something unique from the drawing tool.

You can take this in any direction you'd like.

• Change the function of the drawing tool - what if a pen were to become a backscratcher?

• Create a drawing tool that transforms into something else. What if a pencil became a smelly monster?

Paso 4:

Creating a character

Task 1:

Open your sketchbook to a fresh page.

Create a simple character. It could be your self portrait as a character or someone else completely.

Draw several different versions of this character showing different emotions and personality traits.

Task 2:

Find random objects that you can place onto your sketchbook.

Draw your character interacting with each object.

Take a photo of each drawing and upload it to google classroom.
