Have you ever sent or received a postcard?
How does a postcard differ from a letter, text, or email?
For this project you will be exploring a location in the world that you have always wanted to visit. After learning more about your chosen place, you will create a postcard based on that location.
Steps:
1. Launch Google Earth
Navigate around the globe to find a location that you are interested in.
Not sure where you'd like to visit? Google Earth has an "I'm feeling lucky" button on the left hand side of the screen. This will choose for you!
2. In your sketchbook, create at least 3 drawings of places of interest within your chosen location. Include any important information about the places you draw.
Here's an example...
I have chosen Edinburgh, Scotland. In my Google Earth navigation, I notice three spots that are interesting to me:
The Edinburgh Dungeon - a tourist attraction that takes you through a dungeon
Calton Hill - A majestic hill with the ruins of an unfinished National Monument
and Arthur's Seat - a beautiful mountain right in the middle of the city.
I will sketch these three spots in my sketchbook.
3. Brainstorm ideas for your postcard. What about your location are you advertising? Who is the postcard meant for? (a child, a teenager, an adult, someone interested in wildlife, someone interested in architecture, etc.)
4. Using a ruler, draw a rectangle within the page of your sketchbook which will contain the front of your postcard. Plan out your composition and begin to draw your ideas.
You may use words only for the name of your location and any necessary supplementary information. Try to rely on your drawings to tell the story of your location.
5. Include color by using colored pencils, crayons, or markers.
